The white pebbles on the private walkway shone like pearls in the moonlight, so it was easy enough for Annabel and Scott to find their way back to the cottages. When they reached the Villa Sanctuaire, she saw that there was a light on inside.
âLooks like Jack made it back here,â Scott observed.
âI have to go in,â Annabel said. âI must return this gown; I left my clothes in a suitcase in Téaâs room.â She was feeling more and more like Cinderella. Sheâd only had two glasses of champagne, but after this wild evening, sheâd had enough of a world that seemed to be suddenly spinning in the wrong direction.
Scott, looking tired now, said, âOkay. Tell Jack Iâll bring his tailcoat back tomorrow morning. Take care of yourself, Annabel,â and he went down the path to his Jasmine Cottage.
The villa seemed like a serene safe haven. Jack was nowhere to be seen, so she entered Téaâs room and turned on a tiny lamp on the dressing table. She removed her wrap and wig, then slipped out of the golden ball gown and carefully hung it up. She sighed as she crossed the room to open up her suitcase and resume her old role in life.
âWhoâs there?â Jack said a moment later, coming to the threshold of Téaâs room and peering into the dimly lit area with some alarm. âTéa, is that you?â he asked cautiously.
âNo, itâs just me,â Annabel said from the dark corner where she stood. âI came for my clothes.â
âAnnabel,â he said gently. âYou are never âjustâ you.â He turned to politely retreat.
âDonât go,â she said softly. She had put on her blouse, but it was unbuttoned as she stood there in her slip. She had not yet put on her skirt.
Jack came toward her, close enough for them to look into each otherâs eyes. They exchanged a smile, as they had so many times when working together, in which they delighted in something they agreed on. Only this time, she saw that he was truly acknowledging the deeper feeling that lay between them. She thought triumphantly, I didnât imagine it. Itâs not just me who feels like this. He does, too.
Jack came closer and put a hand to her cheek. âYou are so lovely,â he said. âIâve never met anyone like you before.â
He stroked her face until his fingers reached her lips and traced their shape, too. Then his hands traveled down the sides of her neck, to her shoulders, where he slowly removed the unbuttoned blouse. He lifted her hair so that he could kiss her neck, and then he put his arms around her and gently pushed the straps of her underslip off her shoulders, cupping her naked breasts in each hand.
She raised her face to him, and his mouth found hers. Then they moved together toward the bed. Téaâs bed. As they slid beneath the soft sheets and into each otherâs arms, Annabel felt the moonlight all around her, shining in soft ripples that
